I opened Urushi Atelier Yamanoha in Ibaraki, Japan in 2023. This region, known as Okukuji, is one of Japan’s leading urushi-producing areas. As a lacquer artist, I hope not only to create my own works but also to contribute in some way to the future of urushi production.
From this place, I hope to share the beauty of urushi with people around the world.
Tasuku Murose
Urushi is a natural sap obtained from the lacquer tree. In Japan, it has been used for approximately 9,000 years as both a coating material and an adhesive.
It hardens through a reaction with moisture in the air, forming a durable and beautiful film. This coating is highly resistant to acids and alkalis, and enables a wide range of decorative techniques such as maki-e.
As a truly unique material, urushi has supported Japanese culture and art.
Using Okukuji urushi, known for its high transparency and beautiful gloss, we create lacquer bowls, chopsticks and other items.
